Qatar Updates COVID-19 Travel Policies: Key Details for Residents and Travelers

In a significant move aimed at facilitating travel during the ongoing pandemic, Qatar has updated its list of low-risk COVID-19 countries as of August 15. This development comes as a part of the country’s broader strategy to manage the consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak while ensuring the health and safety of its residents and guests.

Low-Risk Countries: A Comprehensive List

Travelers entering Qatar from specified low-risk COVID-19 countries can benefit from a more streamlined entry process. The updated list includes Algeria, Australia, Austria, and numerous other nations, totaling 39 countries. This list reflects Qatar’s focus on maintaining safe travel avenues for its residents and international visitors alike.

  • Notable inclusion on the list:
    • Asia: Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, China
    • Europe: Germany, France, Italy, Sweden
    • Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
    • North America: Canada
    • Other regions: Morocco, Cuba, Turkey, the United Kingdom

Entry Procedures for Travelers from Low-Risk Countries

While the update is promising, travelers who arrive from these low-risk areas will still be required to adhere to specific safety protocols to ensure public health is upheld. Upon arrival:

  1. COVID-19 Testing: Travelers must undergo a COVID-19 test at the airport.
  2. Home Quarantine: They are obligated to sign a pledge for a one-week home quarantine. During this period, their status on the Ehteraz app—a vital tool for tracking health status in Qatar—will indicate a yellow color, denoting quarantine obligations.

Follow-up Testing and Quarantine Release

The procedures don’t end after the initial quarantine. On the sixth day of their quarantine, travelers are required to visit a designated health center for a follow-up COVID-19 test. The outcomes of this test will determine their next steps:

  • Positive Result: The traveler will be moved into isolation, illustrating Qatar’s proactive approach to managing potential health risks.
  • Negative Result: A negative outcome allows the traveler to officially end their quarantine, at which point their Ehteraz app status will turn green, indicating they are clear to navigate the community freely.

Entry for Returning Residents

Qatar’s policies also cater to its residents who find themselves abroad due to pandemic restrictions. The Qatar government has exempted residents whose residence permits have expired or those who have been away for more than six months from paying any fees associated with their residence status. This exemption serves as a financial relief for residents who have been affected by the global travel disruptions caused by the pandemic.

Distinct Policies for High-Risk Countries

Travelers coming from high-risk countries face a different set of regulations upon which they must comply. Unlike their counterparts from low-risk nations, these travelers will need to enter a dedicated quarantine hotel for an entire week upon their arrival in Qatar, reflecting the heightened concerns regarding health safety from these regions.

Efficient Management through Technology

The Ehteraz app has been a cornerstone of Qatar’s response to the pandemic, simplifying the process of tracking COVID-19 statuses and managing quarantines. Staying updated and using this application effectively is crucial for travelers and residents navigating the evolving landscape of travel regulations and health recommendations.

Continued Monitoring and Updates

This ongoing situation underscores the fluidity of our current global health crisis, reinforcing the necessity for regular updates and flexibility in travel regulations. Qatar is committed to adapting its policies as necessary, ensuring public safety while also maintaining connectivity for its residents.

To get the most recent updates about travel restrictions and immigration regulations, individuals can refer to resources such as Deloitte’s COVID-19 Digital Map, which offers insights into evolving policies across various countries.

This structured approach by Qatar reflects its commitment to safeguarding public health while resuming normalcy in travel, striking a balance between safety and accessibility.
