New Leadership at Nigeria’s Immigration Training School
In a significant move for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Comptroller General Kemi Nana Nandap has appointed Comptroller Tony Akuneme as the new Commandant of the Immigration Training School located in Kano. This transition is more than just a change in personnel; it symbolizes a broader vision to enhance the training and operational effectiveness of NIS across the nation.
Vision for Repositioning NIS Training Institutions
The appointment aligns with the strategic objectives of the Comptroller General, aiming to reposition NIS training facilities to meet the standards of other elite security agencies. Akin Akinlabi, the spokesperson for NIS, emphasized that the goal is not merely to maintain the status quo but to actively improve the quality of training provided to immigration officers. By aligning more closely with modern practices and methodologies, the NIS hopes to elevate its overall service delivery and operational capabilities.
Expectations for the New Commandant
With Akuneme stepping into this pivotal role, expectations are high. Akinlabi noted that Akuneme’s prior experience in effective communication, public relations, and border management would serve as valuable assets to his new position. The NIS anticipates that his insights will significantly enhance the training modules currently in place and lead to improved services that align with the statutory mandates of the NIS.
A Background of Experience
Prior to his recent appointment, Comptroller Akuneme held the position of Comptroller in charge of Illela Border Command in Sokoto, showcasing his extensive experience in border management operations. His role in managing the Federal Capital Territory and serving as the Service Spokesman granted him unique insights into the operational challenges and communication strategies necessary for effective governance and public engagement.
Akuneme’s international experience is noteworthy as well. He has served as the Immigration Attache at the Nigerian High Commission in Canada and was also the Immigration Desk Officer at the Diaspora Commission in the Presidency. These roles have equipped him with a diverse understanding of immigration issues, both domestically and internationally.
Immediate Implementation of New Changes
The change in leadership takes immediate effect, as confirmed by Akinlabi. The posting order was signed by Deputy Comptroller General Afolayan Ayeni, who oversees Human Resources Management within the service. This swift implementation underscores the urgency and importance placed on reforming and enhancing the training processes at the NIS Training School.
Enhancing Service Delivery
The overarching intent behind these leadership transitions is to fortify the capacity building efforts within the Nigeria Immigration Service. By investing in training infrastructure and personnel, the NIS aims to ensure that officers are well-prepared to tackle the various challenges associated with immigration and border security in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.
As the NIS embarks on this transformative journey, all eyes will be on Comptroller Tony Akuneme to see how his leadership will contribute to the redefined goals of the service and enhance Nigeria’s immigration management. Through effective leadership and a commitment to continuous improvement, the potential for substantial growth lies ahead.
