Growing Pessimism Among Latinos in the Wake of Trump’s Second Term

As the political landscape continues to evolve in the United States, a new survey from the Pew Research Center reveals a stark increase in pessimism among Latinos since the 2024 presidential election. This shift in sentiment reflects concerns over personal situations and the overall direction of the country.

Disapproval Rates: A Deepening Divide

According to the recent Pew survey, a significant 70% of Latinos disapprove of President Donald Trump’s performance. This discontent is particularly pronounced regarding his administration’s approach to immigration, with 65% expressing dissatisfaction. Furthermore, 61% believe that Trump’s economic policies have exacerbated national conditions.

These figures paint a picture of considerable disenchantment, especially when you consider that nearly half of Latino voters backed Trump in 2024, a notable shift from the previous two elections. The enthusiasm that once buoyed his support within the community appears to be eroding dramatically.

Survey Insights and Methodology

The Pew Research Center’s survey, which involved responses from 8,046 U.S. adults, including 4,923 Hispanics, was conducted from October 6 to 16, 2025. An additional survey in September 2025 included 3,445 U.S. adults and 629 Hispanics, further capturing the evolving sentiments within this demographic.

Partisan Polarization: A Key Factor

The Latino community remains predominantly divided along partisan lines. Among Latinos who still support Trump, an impressive 81% approve of his performance, although this number has declined significantly from 93% at the beginning of his second term. Conversely, almost all Latinos who voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election express strong disapproval of Trump, underscoring the deep political rifts that characterize the U.S. electoral landscape.

Policy Shifts and Their Impact

Trump’s second term has introduced several sweeping policy changes, particularly in immigration. His administration’s aggressive tactics, including heightened detentions and deportations, have not gone unnoticed. Economically, his administration’s focus on tariffs and a tax initiative dubbed the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ appears to be reshaping federal priorities, further impacting Latino communities.

Deteriorating Situations: Self-Perceptions Among Latinos

An alarming statistic emerging from the Pew survey shows that nearly two-thirds (68%) of Hispanics believe their situation in the U.S. has worsened over the past year. Only 9% feel it has improved, while 22% claim it has remained the same. This marks a pivotal moment in nearly two decades of Pew Research Center studies, where a majority of Latinos have conveyed a sense of deterioration in their conditions. For context, in late 2019, only 39% said their circumstances had worsened.

Additionally, 78% of Latinos now say that the Trump administration’s policies are harmful to Hispanics, a stark increase from 69% in 2019.

Growing Concerns About Belonging

Perhaps the most striking finding is the growing concern among Latinos about their place in American society. Over half (55%) report significant worries about their belonging under Trump’s presidency, showing an increase from 48% in 2019.

Immigration Anxiety: Rising Fear and Uncertainty

Immigration remains a cornerstone of Trump’s policy agenda, and as such, it is central to the fears permeating Latino communities. According to 2024 American Community Survey estimates, approximately 44% of Latino adults—around 21.1 million people—are immigrants.

The heightened focus on immigration enforcement has exacerbated anxiety among this demographic, with 52% expressing worry that they, a family member, or a close friend could face deportation. This concern is particularly prevalent among younger Latinos, those with Central American roots, and voters who supported Harris in the last election.

Additionally, social media and community buzz reveal a growing awareness of ICE activities, with 59% of Latino adults reporting awareness of raids or arrests in their neighborhoods over the past six months. As a result, many have adjusted their daily lives. About 19% say they have changed routines out of fear of being asked for proof of legal status, and 11% carry documents verifying their citizenship or immigration status more frequently.

Criticism of Deportation Policies

The sentiment towards Trump’s deportation policies is shifting, with 71% now stating that the administration is doing too much, compared to 56% earlier in the year. This criticism indicates a change in perspective from the Latino community, reflecting growing unrest and dissatisfaction with policies directly affecting their lives.

Even as complicated as this political landscape is, it’s important to recognize that the majority—82%—of Latino adults hold full legal status under U.S. law, while 18% remain unauthorized immigrants. These statistics underscore the complexity within this community as they navigate an increasingly challenging socio-political environment.

The findings from the Pew Research Center provide a comprehensive look into the evolving sentiments among Latinos, illustrating the challenges they face and the significant changes in their perspectives since the last election cycle. As this demographic continues to grow and influence the political spectrum, understanding their opinions and concerns becomes essential.
