Dubai’s Crackdown on Visit Visa Violations: What You Need to Know
In recent months, Dubai authorities have intensified their efforts to combat the issue of individuals working illegally on visit visas within the emirate. Travel agents are reporting a significant reduction in the number of people overstaying their visas, thanks to a series of stringent inspections and enforcement measures that have been rolled out since the end of a generous visa amnesty program.
The Move Towards Compliance
Safeer Mohammed, general manager of Smart Travels, shed light on the current state of affairs, stating that numerous company premises have been subject to inspections. “We’ve heard of multiple company premises being inspected recently. Inspection teams have also visited our office tower several times over the past few months,” he mentioned. He underlined that while working on a visit visa has always been illegal, the current approach of the authorities is much more rigorous, ensuring strict adherence to these rules.
This crackdown follows the conclusion of a lenient amnesty scheme that allowed those overstaying their visas to either rectify their status or leave the country without facing penalties. This initiative, which occurred from September to December 2024, was instrumental in helping thousands of individuals resolve their visa issues.
A Spike in Enforcement Actions
The end of the amnesty program marked a turning point in enforcement actions. January saw a significant rise in inspections that resulted in the arrest of over 6,000 visa violators. Safeer highlighted that these measures have had a profound impact, stating, “Since January, we’ve seen the number of people overstaying their visit visas reduced to less than 10 percent.” This dramatic decline illustrates the effectiveness of the authorities’ renewed focus on compliance.
Bharat Aidasani from Pluto Travels reinforced the message that it has always been illegal to work on a visit visa in the UAE. He advised customers against doing so, noting that inspections have become increasingly frequent. "The penalties are severe, with deportation being the consequence for anyone caught working on a visit visa," he warned, emphasizing the need for potential workers to adhere strictly to visa regulations.
Stricter Penalties and Company Accountability
In August of the previous year, amendments to the UAE’s labor law introduced hefty fines aimed at preventing employers from hiring individuals without the proper work permits or bringing them into the country under false pretenses. Companies that fail to comply with these regulations now face fines ranging from Dh100,000 to Dh1 million, creating a strong deterrent against hiring individuals on visit visas.
Noushad Hassan from Alhind Travels Business Centre echoed these sentiments as he shared observations of increased inspections since the amnesty ended. “We’ve heard of several companies being checked to ensure no one on a visit visa is working there,” he stated. He believes that these initiatives serve as a crucial measure of oversight, leading to a decline in visa overstays.
Addressing Workers’ Challenges
The consequences of overstaying a visa can be dire for many individuals, leading to situations where workers find themselves stranded with no recourse. Noushad noted that often, stranded workers would reach out for assistance in returning home, revealing a heart-wrenching reality for those who may find themselves in dire straits. Many of these individuals, lacking literacy and financial resources, are unable to cover the costs of return tickets or fines associated with overstaying.
In light of these challenges, new rules have been introduced requiring tourists to possess confirmed air tickets, hotel reservations, and a minimum amount of cash or bank funds before entering the UAE. These regulations are designed to protect travelers and ensure they are not easily exploited by unscrupulous employers.
