It’s no secret that numerous countries are updating their travel advisories for their citizens interested in visiting the United States. These new advisories come amid escalating tensions between the U.S. president and various foreign leaders, particularly in the context of a burgeoning trade war. However, the driving force behind these warnings isn’t just the economic strife; it’s the newly imposed immigration laws that have created a concerning environment for tourists entering the U.S.

Recent executive orders have resulted in hostility at border entry points, affecting not only undocumented immigrants but also foreign nationals holding valid visas. Nations like France, Germany, Canada, and many others are taking notice and advising their citizens to approach travel to the U.S. with caution, alerting them to potential risks including interrogation, arrest, detention, and even deportation.

New Zealand is preparing to join the ranks of countries like Belgium, Canada, and the United Kingdom in revising their travel advisories. This comes after reports emerged that eight Kiwis faced detention under the stringent new U.S. immigration laws. According to local media, these incidents have catalyzed a review of the travel advisory, prompting New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to recommend that citizens verify entry requirements before any planned travel to the U.S.

New Zealand Warns Citizens to Check Entry Requirements Into the U.S. Before Traveling

Though New Zealand last reviewed its U.S. travel advisory in 2023, recent events have prompted a reconsideration. The MFAT has indicated an active review of their advisory status, emphasizing the importance of staying informed about any potential changes. Currently, at least 11 countries have warned their citizens against traveling to the United States, which includes a particularly harsh advisory issued by China amid mounting economic tensions.

As the review progresses, Kiwis are encouraged to confirm the specifics of their travel documentation and entry requirements. Engaging with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate is advised to ensure they have the most up-to-date information. The recommendation to check entry criteria underscores the ongoing uncertainties surrounding international travel to the United States.

Eight Kiwis Detained at U.S. Border Since November

Reports from MFAT reveal that since November 2024, eight Kiwis have experienced detention at U.S. border checkpoints. One particular case involved a Kiwi woman in her 40s who was detained for an alarming 15 hours at San Francisco International Airport. During her detainment, she was subjected to five hours of intense interrogation by U.S. border control agents, who raised issues regarding her visa. Ultimately, she was coerced into purchasing an expensive return ticket to New Zealand while being escorted under heavy security.

“She obtained the necessary visas, could provide proof of income, and had a solid plan to leave the U.S.,” noted a spokesperson. “This experience left her completely humiliated and deeply traumatized.”

Many foreign tourists have recounted horrifying experiences at U.S. border controls, highlighting the inhumane conditions of detention centers. Descriptions of these facilities paint a grim picture, often likening them to jails filled with hardened criminals, lacking adequate sleeping arrangements and basic necessities.

The MFAT has also issued specific guidelines for Kiwis identifying as LGBTQIA+, advising them to be aware of new U.S. customs and laws that may affect them. A recent executive order mandates that “all government-issued identification documents must now reflect one’s immutable biological classification as either male or female,” potentially impacting transgender and gender-diverse individuals traveling in the U.S.

As the situation continues to evolve, New Zealand will likely formalize its travel advisory for the U.S. With reports of detainees facing miscommunication and misunderstanding at U.S. border points, it’s essential for travelers to remain vigilant and well-informed. For the latest updates and travel information, keep an eye on government travel advisories and make safety a priority when planning international journeys.
