On 21 February 2025, Ethiopia marked a historic milestone in its journey toward modernization by launching its first electronic passport (E-passport). A Step Forward in Passport Security and Efficiency

The newly introduced E-passport is a significant leap forward, incorporating state-of-the-art biometric technology, advanced encryption methods, and tamper-proof materials. This aligns with international standards and serves to enhance the security of Ethiopian travel documents dramatically. In conjunction with this launch, ICS has also revamped its issuance systems, streamlining the application process to improve service delivery for Ethiopian citizens.

Selamawit Dawit, CEO of Immigration and Citizenship Services, remarked, “The introduction of the E-passport is a game-changer for Ethiopia’s immigration services. With improved security, faster processing, and internationally recognized standards, this passport will significantly enhance the travel experience for Ethiopians while strengthening our global recognition and border control.”

This collaborative effort highlights Ethiopia’s determination to reduce dependency on foreign technologies. As Dr. Brook Taye, CEO of Ethiopian Investment Holdings, stated, “The launch of Ethiopia’s first E-passport is a testament to our commitment to advancing strategic national projects that drive modernization and efficiency. By partnering with Toppan Security and ICS, we are not only addressing the security printing gap but also establishing Ethiopia as a leader in secure document production.”

A New Chapter for Ethiopia’s Digital Immigration Services

The launch of the E-passport is just one component of a broader digital transformation initiative being spearheaded by ICS. Starting 24 February 2025, ICS plans to unveil a suite of services, including visa, ID, and permit offerings, utilizing modernized registration and issuance systems designed to minimize processing times and bolster security safeguards against fraud and identity theft.
