Immigration applications can be high stakes, and timing is crucial. You’ll naturally want to ensure that Canada’s immigration department receives your application on time. Understanding how to confirm receipt of your application can alleviate some of the stress associated with the immigration process.

The methods of confirmation will differ based on how you submitted your application—whether online, via a visa application center, or through a paper submission.

Online Applications

For those who apply online, you can expect an immediate confirmation page after successfully submitting your immigration application. This page serves as proof that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has received your submission.

Additionally, an email will be sent to you, confirming the submission and prompting you to check your IRCC online account for a confirmation message and your application number. This email usually arrives within a few hours, although it is important to note that this is not an official Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR).

  • Confirming that your application was submitted and received.
  • Prompting you to check your IRCC online account for further details.

AORs are only sent after IRCC actively opens your application, confirming its completeness before beginning processing—which can take several days to months. It’s advisable to keep both the confirmation email and AOR for your records once you receive them.

Applications through a Visa Application Centre

If you submitted your application through a Visa Application Centre (VAC), tracking services are available to notify you when your application has been received by IRCC.

To utilize these tracking services, you will need to have a tracking ID or reference number, typically found on the receipt or invoice from the VAC. The tracking options may vary based on the country and VAC but can include:

  • Website tracking tools.
  • Email notifications.
  • Web chat support.
  • Helpline numbers.
  • SMS updates (which may incur additional charges).

For more details on VAC tracking and services, you can explore IRCC’s dedicated webpage.

Paper Applications

For those who opt to submit a paper application, keep in mind that you will not receive an AOR letter. To establish proof of delivery, it’s recommended to utilize a postal or courier service that offers tracking and requires signature confirmation upon delivery. This ensures that you can verify your application has reached IRCC.

Moreover, some paper applications can be linked to your IRCC secure account, allowing you to receive up-to-date case status information and messages related to your application.

How to Link an Application to Your Online Account

Linking your application to an online account streamlines communication and updates. However, keep in mind you have five attempts to link your application. After that, you will be locked out for 24 hours if unsuccessful.

The following steps can help you link your application:

Step one: Create an IRCC secure account if you haven’t done so already.

Step two: In the “View the applications you submitted” section, select “Add (link) your application to your account to check your status.” You will need to input your application number at this stage.

Step three: Enter the same details you provided in your original paper application. If any updates have occurred since submitting, be sure to input the most current information.

Once linked, you will receive communications via your online account rather than through paper letters. Typically, it can take up to five days for your application to be visible in your online account. Should you encounter a “Linking in progress” message, check back later. If not visible within five days, reach out to IRCC through their web form for assistance.

Applications That Can Be Linked

Currently, only specific applications can be linked to your secure IRCC account, including:

Permanent Residence (PR) Applications

  • Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).
  • Caregiver pathways, including:
    • Home Child Care Provider Pilot.
    • Home Support Worker Pilot.
    • In-Canada live-in caregivers.
    • Caring for children and high medical needs.
  • Express Entry.
  • Family sponsorship (excluding sponsor applications).

Other Applications

It is essential to note that IRCC anticipates expanding this list in the future. If your application cannot be linked to an IRCC secure account, don’t worry—services like the Check Application Status tool and processing time inquiries can still provide you with pertinent updates.
