However, while the atmosphere may seem liberal in many ways, certain regulations, particularly around language and behavior, can be unexpectedly severe. For instance, using profane language in text messages can lead to hefty fines or even imprisonment in the UAE. Social media users can also run into trouble for “bad” words, emphasizing that what’s accepted can be exceedingly situational—an unspoken understanding of what flies and what doesn’t.
A Personal Experience in Doha
Recently, during a layover in Doha that lasted roughly 20 hours, I seized the opportunity to explore the city. Returning to Hamad International Airport the next day, I made my way to the Al Safwa First Class check-in area.
