Moving to a Digital Immigration System
In an era where technology continually reshapes our lives, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is embracing a transformative approach by developing a digital immigration system. This significant shift involves replacing traditional physical documents with a seamless, secure digital record of individuals’ identities and immigration statuses, commonly referred to as an eVisa. What does this mean for you? Let’s explore the ins and outs of this new system and what it entails.
Find out more about eVisas and how to use them.
The Journey So Far
Since the inception of the eVisa concept in 2018, millions of applicants have benefitted from this innovative approach. UKVI not only welcomes these advancements but also takes pride in providing up-to-date statistics regarding the number of accounts created, making the transition to digital as transparent as possible. Many residents and visitors alike have navigated this modernization successfully, revealing a growing recognition of its advantages.
It’s important to note that converting your existing physical immigration document to an eVisa will not alter your immigration status or the conditions related to your permission to enter or stay in the UK. This means a smooth transition without any hiccups in your legal standing.
The Benefits of an eVisa
Embracing a digital immigration system comes with various benefits aimed at enhancing user experience and security. Here are some key advantages:
-
Unmatched Security: eVisas are designed to be secure, significantly reducing the risk of loss, theft, or tampering compared to traditional physical documents.
-
Streamlined Processing: No more waiting for physical documents post-application! While a few users may need to provide biometric information in person, most will receive immediate access to their digital record.
-
Effortless Verification: Proving your immigration status at the UK border becomes quicker and more straightforward, as you can easily share your eVisa with employers, landlords, and other entities.
Another essential feature is the automatic sharing of relevant information about your immigration status with certain government departments and public authorities, sparing you the need for additional paperwork.

What You Need to Do
Whether you’re a newcomer or a long-term resident, your next steps will depend on your individual circumstances. The first logical step is to check if you’re eligible to get access to an eVisa.
Updates on eVisa Implementation
New Applications from 15 July 2025
Attention all future applicants: starting from 15 July 2025, the application process is evolving. If you apply for a work or study visa after this date, don’t expect to receive a physical vignette. Instead, you will need to create a UKVI account for access to your eVisa before traveling to the UK. Detailed instructions will follow with your application decision, simplifying what could otherwise be a complex process.
However, if you’re applying as a dependant or as the main applicant for visas other than work or study, expect to continue receiving a vignette as part of your application.
Expanded Access to eVisa
In recent developments, more individuals can now access their eVisa. This includes those who were issued a Form for affixing a visa (FAV) or granted a visa extension but lack a valid identity document, such as a passport or an expired biometric residence permit (BRP). Now, you can easily create a UKVI account to obtain your eVisa, enabling you to maneuver through immigration processes with greater ease.
