Thailand: The Top Travel Destination for Qatar Residents in 2023

Thailand continues to enchant travelers from around the globe, consistently ranking as one of the most favoured travel destinations for residents of Qatar. According to the Thai embassy in Doha, the demand for travel to Thailand remains strong this year, highlighted by the issuance of over 6,000 tourist visas to Qatari residents.

Growing International Visitor Numbers

From January to May of 2023, Thailand successfully welcomed more than 14 million international tourists. Among them, 177,201 visitors hailed from the Middle East, with an impressive 10,052 specifically from Qatar. This influx signifies a robust interest in Thai culture, cuisine, and coastal beauty, traits that make the country a perennial favourite among Middle Eastern travelers.

The Ambitious Tourist Target for 2023

The Thai government has set an ambitious goal for 2023, aiming to attract 40 million visitors—a figure that echoes the record set in 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. To facilitate this objective, Thailand has implemented new visa measures designed to enhance travel accessibility for international tourists, especially those coming from Qatar.

Enhanced Visa Policies

Recent updates in visa regulations aim to simplify the travel experience. The Thai embassy has enhanced visa-on-arrival (VOA) and visa exemption privileges for tourists. Under the new framework, nationals from 31 countries and territories can now apply for a VOA at Thailand’s immigration checkpoints, allowing for a 15-day stay primarily for tourism.

Additionally, nationals from an extended list of 93 countries enjoy visa exemption for stays of up to 60 days. This can be further extended for an additional 30 days, subject to approval from immigration officers. Travelers intending to stay longer for other purposes are advised to apply for the appropriate visa type in Thailand before their initial stay expires.

The New Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

A noteworthy addition to Thailand’s visa offerings is the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). This is particularly designed for individuals traveling to Thailand for work as digital nomads or freelancers. The DTV accommodates various activities, including muay thai training, Thai cooking classes, medical treatments, and attending seminars or music festivals. With its five-year validity and a stay of up to 180 days per entry, this visa opens a new realm of possibilities for long-term visitors.

Streamlined E-Visa Application

Earlier this year, the Thai embassy in Doha launched an innovative online e-Visa application platform, further simplifying the visa application process. Residents of Qatar seeking to apply for a Thai visa can now conveniently submit their applications, supporting documents, and payment online through the portal at Thai E-Visa. This modern approach eliminates the previous requirement for applicants to visit the embassy in person and submit original documents, enhancing the overall experience.
